Having a child with diabetes is overwhelming! I know first hand!
I’ve been where you are, receiving twice the devastating news that my child had diabetes. I remember the days of shock, overwhelm, and hopelessness. I remember wishing it was me with diabetes instead of my children. I searched for hours on the internet for ways to “make it go away” or find a cure. I looked at tons of research studies wishing there was one that would cure diabetes.
I had to learn to take care of children with diabetes and all the extra things diabetes requires and all the mental energy it requires. I had to get up several nights a week and check blood sugars and worry while they were at school and throughout the day about diabetes. Diabetes takes a lot of mental energy and is always in the back of your mind with no holidays.
Hi! I’m Sylvia White, a Registered Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Educator, and Licensed Professional Counselor in the Memphis, TN area. I specialize in diabetes treatment and love my work as a CDE doing insulin pump training and diabetes education. I especially love working with newly diagnosed children and their parents, inspiring hope that things will be ok!
I received a Bachelors in Dietetics from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Masters in Community Agency Counseling from the University of Memphis.
I was eventually able to trust God in the verse from Romans 8:28 that says “And we know that in all things, God works for the good of those who love Him” and I found my hope in God and let Him turn the worse thing in my life into something that can be used to glorify Him and help others in the same situation. That’s why I became a pump trainer and diabetes educator. I wanted to help other parents like me know that it does get better and diabetes is manageable, and especially give them hope.
I’m married to a wonderful husband and have three children, two of which were diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2006. From personal as well as professional experience, I know very well the challenges of raising children with Type 1 Diabetes and I want to help you learn to feel confident and find hope and peace that you will find your “new normal” of life with diabetes.
I strongly believe Education is the Key to Success and Confidence!
